Maukhari Empire and Chess

Maukhuri Kings came to power beginning of 6th century AD. They ruled large parts of North India and

were strong enough the thwart the Huns in north west India and establish direct connects with the

Sassanid empire in Persia. To them goes the credit of building Kannauj into a great city and making it

their capital. The focus in India now started shifting to Kannauj from Patliputra as the centre of Indian

geo-politics. To Maukhuris goes the credit of exporting chess from India when the Maukhuri King sent

the game with his Minister to the court of King Khosrow, the Persian emperor. The Maukhuri empire

came to an end in early 7th century as a result of defeats at the hands of Later Gupta Kings.
